Residents of the Southern Mallee and Karoonda East Murray local government areas may soon notice a lift in their spirits as their health, well-being and involvement in arts activity become the focus of a new position created by Country Arts SA and the Mallee Health Service Incorporated.

Ms Judy Schroeder has been announced as the new Arts and Health Community Development Officer based at Mallee Health Service, but working jointly with both organisations.
Ms Schroeder has a strong background in health and community development, most recently working for the Mallee Health Service as facilitator of the Mallee Community Builders Program and in project work in community capacity building. Country Arts SA is pleased to welcome Judy into their network of officers across the State.

In announcing the partnership Ken Lloyd, Country Arts SA's Chief Executive Officer reflected on the series of partnerships Country Arts SA has been able to develop to support arts activities statewide. "Regional partnerships are the cornerstone of Country Arts SA's operations, providing significant support in the delivery of essential arts and cultural development programs and services to regional South Australians. We currently have several jointly funded arts officer positions in regional South Australia, including Port Augusta, Streaky Bay, Bordertown and in Whyalla. Each position has a focus specific to the region in which they operate," he said.
Ms Roxanne Ramsey, Executive Director, Country Division, of the Department of Health believes that this partnership between Country Arts SA and the Mallee Health Service represents a significant opportunity to support community wellbeing and public health in the region. "Relationships between health services and communities have been under the spotlight since the release of the Generational Health Review and initiatives such as this are an excellent example of communities, health services and other agencies working together to provide increased and better resources for those living in regional and remote South Australia," she said.
This partnership is a timely one for Country Arts SA with its increasing focus on the potential for the arts and health sectors to work together to achieve common goals.
In 2003, Country Arts SA made a commitment through its South East Country Arts Board to a project in partnership with the South East Regional Health Service.
The South East Arts and Health Strategy is a significant, new regional arts and health initiative aimed at developing a creative strategy and an innovative arts project promoting a holistic approach to health and well being within the South East community. The project was initiated in response to the high levels of youth suicide in the region.
The initiative recently received $63,000 from the Community Cultural Development Board of the Australia Council for Stage 2.
Members of the Southern Mallee and Karoonda East Murray region are invited to meet Ms Schroeder by contacting her on 8577 9206. In particular, those groups who have a great arts idea and are seeking funding are encouraged to contact Ms Schroeder as soon as possible as Country Arts SA's next grant round closes on 1 November 2004 for projects beginning after 1 February 2005.
Community based applicants and organisations will be eligible to apply to the following programs-New Communities, Local Initiatives for Individuals. Local Initiatives for Organisations and Partnerships and Collaborations.
Applications must be received at Country Arts SA's head office, 2 McLaren Parade, Port Adelaide SA 5015 by 5.30pm, Monday 1 November 2004.
