Top level Hospitals Pinnaroo Hospital Redevelopment

The final stage of the $500,000 upgrade of PinnarooHospital’s aged care wing will begin this month. Executive-Officer/ Director of Nursing Ms Di Thornton is looking forward to a June finish for what has been a three-year upgrade. ``It will be fabulous to be finished,’’ she said last week. ``We’re really looking forward to it.’’

Work will include a new front entrance, small lounge area, kitchen dining room where the residents can have a meal and engage in cooking as part of their Diversional Therapy. Also included with the new look front entrance will be designated disabled parking. The hospital courtyard – currently a slippery slope of rubble – will also be upgraded with the new dining room leading out onto it.

Ms Thornton stated that the new facility reflected a growing need for aged care in the Mallee and as a result of the upgrade the hospital had gained six extra Commonwealth funded beds. The new wing will now house 23 beds for aged care residents.

The full development has included the complete refurbishment and redevelopment of the East Wing, under existing structures, with the addition of a large lounge room overlooking Bundy Terrace. This gave the 21 current residents – who are also looking forward to the end of the redevelopment – ``really good views of the town and people coming and going’’.

``They love the new facilities and are looking forward to it being finished,’’ Ms Thornton said.

Mallee Health Service is also busy co-ordinating projects for the year, including, seeking funding for a Men’s Shed, Grant Writing Workshops and Emotional Strength Building programs for women whose aim is to offer support, information and coping techniques for women to manage the everyday stresses of life. All women were invited to attend the Emotional Strength Building program, especially if they were struggling with mental health issues.
