COMMUNITY SINGING - A MODERN DAY ‘SING AROUND THE PIANO’

Community singing groups are taking on the role of the family ‘singing around the piano’ sessions according to singing enthusiast Ms Judy Schroeder, Art and Health Development Officer for Mallee Health Service.

Women from Pinnaroo, Lameroo and Murrayville regularly sing, to their heart’s content, in the Pinnaroo Hospital’s Health Promotion Room.

“It’s about getting people to come together,” said Ms Schroeder, “It’s a bit like the singing around the piano that happened years ago. In community singing there is no pressure. People can sing to their hearts content and go home rejuvenated. There’s no obligation. It’s just a bit of fun.”

Group favorite pieces are “Heida” – an Israeli calling song – and “Bellamamma” – a song from the Torres StraitIslands.
