Canteen Power/ Food for Thought at local school.
|
Canteen Power/Food for Thought day was held at LamerooRegionalCommunitySchool on Wednesday 21 March 2007.
Armed with knowledge that new legislation was to be introduced …”By the end of 2007 SA Policy for School Canteens will be no lollies, deep fried chips, high fat foods such as meat pies and sausage rolls and snack foods with high salt or sugar content.” planning meetings began in 2006. Our goal was to trial healthy choice foods which were easy for volunteers to prepare, tasted good and were popular with the students to buy at the school canteen.
A team approach in planning the day was adopted by the school and involved Parent Club members, the Home Economics teacher, School Representative Council, teachers and the principal of LamerooRegionalCommunitySchool, along with Mallee Health Service’s Youth Worker, Diabetes Nurse Educators and the Primary Health Co-ordinator.
We were successful in obtaining a Federal grant of $1500 and the Southern Mallee District Council also supported the day financially. ETSA Utilities loaned us their mobile kitchen which included a stove, hot plates, fridge, benches, cooking appliances and utensils, and assisted in setting it up.
Yiros, banana smoothies, fruit kebabs, savoury rice, hot potatoes and apple muffins made by the home economic students were the foods of choice to trial. The Yiros were cooked in the ETSA mobile kitchen and the rice, and banana smoothies were prepared in new appliances purchased with the funding monies.
Eight stations were set up in the gym; these consisted of one each for taste testing the six foods, one for information on healthy lunch-boxes, and an activity station. With 244 Reception to year 12 students rotating through the stations during the day it was deemed a success by all.
Murphy’s Law rained on the day giving us a bumpy start due to the power going off for a few hours in the local area! With Steers Electrical and the CFS loaning us generators, and the use of a gas BBQ, we were back in business! We are happy to say that the power was on again by lunch-time just as interested parents arrived to attend a healthy lunch box information session given by the dietician, along with the opportunity for questions and answers.
Veggie Man made appearances throughout the day, and information from Go 2 and 5 was available and given to each student, as was an evaluation form.
The team approach and partnerships established between the different groups made the day an exceptionally enjoyable one, and many thanks must go to all who assisted in making the day such a success, including the SRC students and the home economics teacher. There was a fantastic team spirit as we all worked towards achieving the goal of trialling healthy foods, and we look forward to the next step on the “Healthy Foods in Canteens” journey.
