It is a long way from where he first commenced work in medicine, but Dr Humphrey Adzanku will call Pinnaroo home from September this year.

In March 2003, Dr Adzanku and his family decided to move to Australia and he undertook his first position with the Nganampa Health Service, in the Pitjantjara Lands in northern Australia for a 6 month period. From there he moved to Whyalla in August 2003. It was at this time his family traveled from Ghana to join him and embark on their new adventure together.

He accepted a position and relocated to Hawker in September 2004 to work in a solo practice until this year. For family reasons he wanted to move and live closer to his adult children who are all currently studying in Adelaide. During his time in Hawker, Humphrey studied and gained his RoyalAustralianCollege of General Practice Fellowship.

Dr Adzanku originally hails from Ghana in West Africa. He and his family lived in the country’s capital Accra for 10 years where he worked as a GP in the region.

Dr Adzanku’s wife Laura is currently studying at TAFE and has a love of cooking, ponders the thought of learning to ride a horse and enjoys traveling and sightseeing. She has a love of rural communities and the pace that country lifestyle has to offer, so is keen to meet local people.

Their three adult children Mawuli, Genevieve and Ken are all studying tertiary education. The eldest son, Mawuli, is studying accounting at TAFE and enjoys playing basketball and video games in his spare time. The second child, Genevieve, is an undergraduate in her third year of social work. She is interested in working in a country town in the future. She enjoys working with women and children, meeting people as well as sight seeing our beautiful country. The youngest child Ken is an undergraduate in computer science and enjoys playing basketball and video games when there is time for leisure. They all enjoy the rural lifestyle and are keen to do work placements in a country area in order to gain more experience. Dr Adzanku’s family is living in Adelaide whilst the children are completing their studies. Supporting them through this process is important to them as a family unit.

The Adzanku’s speak three languages; Twi, Ewe and English. In sharing his memories of his homeland Humphrey says,”Ghana is a peaceful nation with a tropical climate, sharing borders with three French-speaking countries”.

The family has thoroughly enjoyed their four years living in various locations in South Australia and is looking forward to meeting people and getting to know the mysteries of the Mallee.

Humphrey said, “We love driving in the rural areas of South Australia and admiring its vast beauty and we are looking forward to exploring the secrets of the Murraylands, with the help of locals.”
