7th National Rural Health Conference

A number of Board Directors and staff members attended the recent 7th National Rural Health Conference held in Hobart.

Learning from the conference is summarised below.

The purpose of attending conferences is usually threefold:
  1. Continuing Education / Personal Professional Development
  2. Organisation Development and applying learning and ideas
  3. Networking and understanding experiences from other delegates.
In order for delegates from the Mallee Health Service to the National Rural Health Conference to apply the learning from this conference and inform other Board Members and staff, it was requested by the Chairperson and C/CEO that all delegates contribute the 3 most important ideas that they picked up from the conference, that we can apply in the Mallee Health Service. All delegates provided this information at the end of the conference.

The list of ideas/comments are represented below, in no particular order:
  • Thinking Laterally about the use of funding for service delivery
  • Oral Health Care as a part of Primary Health Care Programs
  • ‘Eating with Friends’ Program (2)
  • Arts in Health Programs (6) including: Singing programs (noshes); Consider employing an Art Therapist; Fishing for health; Self expression gentle exercise; Laughter therapy; Story telling; Develop and refocus relationship with SA Country Arts Trust; School Children’s music to be used with aged
  • Development of Complementary Therapies
  • MHS to develop papers and showcasing for presentation at conferences (3)
  • Formal Evaluation of Programs we deliver (4)
  • Coordinated promotion of Health Careers to young people in the Mallee
  • Sustain strong community participation
  • Community Capacity Building
  • Reward for champions in community – ie training
  • Action Research with focus on youth, mental health, aged
  • Focus our telehealth strategies – coordination, assign staff time, document savings, orientation, assistant therapists (3)
  • Continue men’s health nights
  • Workplace injuries
  • Social Impact of drought
  • Recruitment and retention of GPs
  • Follow-up After Hours Triage Training Program
  • Rural Emergency Skills training
This information will be added to other information we collect and used in our upcoming strategic planning processes.
