Congratulations must be extended to the Mallee Health Service and Kangaroo Island Health Service who have, as a collaborative effort, secured Commonwealth funding of almost $200,000 to develop a pilot study over the next 2 years for the implementation of the Service Excellence Framework as a suitable method for improving quality risk and safety assessment in Multipurpose Services (MPS).
The MPS Program is a joint Commonwealth and State program, which aims to provide a flexible and integrated approach to health and aged care service delivery in small rural communities. MPS’s receive Commonwealth funding for flexible aged care places and State funding for a range of health services, with the funds being pooled to enable MPS’s to better address the health needs of the community.
The emergence of the MPS model has created a structure where specialties have merged. They are however still required to undertake several and frequent types of reviews and accreditation to demonstrate service quality, such as EQuIP, HACC and Aged Care Standards.
The successful proposal was developed following Service Excellence Framework training conducted within the sites by the Service Excellence Team and attended by Country Health staff. Andrew Gardner (CEO Mallee Health Service) said, “utilising the Service Excellence Framework, the services will employ a Project Officer who will tailor the tool to MPS’s and conduct benchmarking across the two MPS sites. Outcomes from the pilot project will inform possible future use of the Service Excellence Framework in MPS’s nationwide as a single quality, risk and safety framework tailored to the MPS model”.
