Karoonda Welcomes New Doctor
Karoonda Hospital Executive Officer-Director of Nursing, Mr Peter Le-Gallou announced to the community the arrival to Karoonda of resident General Practitioner, Doctor Muhammad Ahmad.

Karoonda Hospital Executive Officer-Director of Nursing, Mr Peter Le-Gallou announced to the community the arrival to Karoonda of resident General Practitioner, Doctor Muhammad Ahmad. Dr Ahmad will begin general practice in Karoonda on 5 April 2004.

Dr Ahmad was chosen from over fifty Doctors inquiring about the GP position in Karoonda. Mr Le-Gallou was overwhelmed by the interest in the position from within Australia and overseas.

Dr Ahmad was born in Sheikupura, Pakistan has a bachelor of medicine and surgery from Punjab University, King Edward Medical College, Lahore Pakistan. Postgraduate studies and placements have found him practicing medicine in such diverse cultures from Pakistan to South Africa and more recently, a number of placements in Australia. Prior to his planned arrival at Karoonda he was a General Practitioner at Port Augusta Medical Centre which also provided emergency services to the Port Augusta Hospital, Port Augusta Goal and the Baxter Immigration Detention Centre.

Mr Le-Gallou said that the doctors gentle manner and primary healthcare approach to the general health of the population, young and old will improve and maintain the health of the community.

Dr Ahmad brings with him his wife, Amina and their two children Mohsin (10) and Areebah (3). The family are looking forward to life in Karoonda and see the small town as a safe and secure place to bring up their children. Dr Ahmad said 'Karoonda, Heart Of The Mallee' has the best of both worlds, a traditional country position within close distance to the facilities of Adelaide and regional centres.

Father and son are ardent cricket enthusiasts and the cricket team will have a keen eye out for a demonstration of their skills.

The previous Doctor left in 2003. The town, to date has been well served by a number of Locum Doctors complimented by the well skilled staff of the Hospital.

EO-DON, Mr Le-Gallou thanked his staff and local community members for their patience and constant encouragement as he pursued with recruitment. He also thanked South Australian Ambulance, Murray Mallee Division of General Practice, Rural Doctors Workforce Agency and the support from Doctors at surrounding Medical Practices.

Mallee Health Chief Executive Officer, Mr Andrew Gardner congratulates Karoonda on recruiting a Doctor with a strong background in primary health. Mr Gardner said that this is important as Mallee Health Service rolls out the Governments health reform strategies.

Karoonda-East Murray Council Chief Executive Officer, Mr Peter Smithson also congratulated Mr Le-Gallou on his efforts and the Hospitals success at recruiting Dr Ahmad. Council recognises that having a resident Doctor in Karoonda is a real asset to the town and of great benefit to the health of the community, he said. On behalf of the council and the community, Mr Smithson welcomes Dr Ahmad and his family to Karoonda.
