The Mallee Health Service, along with the Board of Directors,
|
wishes to advise the Pinnaroo Community that they have secured the services of Dr. Andre de Villiers. Dr. de Villiers will commence consulting on Monday 3 July 2006 at the Mallee Medical Practice, Pinnaroo.
Dr. Andre de Villiers was born in the picturesque town of Stellenbosch near Cape Town, South Africa, in 1957. Besides his parents, he distinctly remembers the miles and miles of vineyards which formed the character of his home town.
Studying at the University of Stellenbosch from 1976 he achieved his MBcHB degree in 1981 after 6 long years of grafting. Initially he was shocked at how little time for other student activities there was, however it was an excellent schooling for the disciplined lifestyle that was to follow. At this stage, like any other student achieving their goal, he felt invincible. Working in the public hospital system soon changed all that as he came to realise that to become a complete doctor, confident enough to work on his own, it would take time and dedication.
In 1986 he ventured into the world of the unknown when he started general practice in the country town of Hopefield in South Africa. This was the same year he married his wife Anette who then had to compete for his attention. Anette quickly learnt, and adapted, to being a doctor’s wife in a small country town. Fortunately she had her own teaching career.
Even though they had no relations, or family support in Australia, Dr. de Villiers and his family made the huge decision, in 2001, to move to Australia. Their two sons Jacques and Jean were 11 and 9 years old (respectively) at this stage. They also made the decision to take a position in Renmark SA where he continues to work, at present. Now in Australia the main challenge was to become familiar with the health system which was entirely different from South Africa’s.
Aside from being in general practice for 20 years Dr de Villiers has experience in the fields of anaesthetics and obstetrics. He has also completed an accredited course on removal and insertions of Implanon contraception. Dr de Villiers has continued his medical education and has improved his knowledge and skills, on various levels, which will be of great benefit to the Mallee Medical Practice, Pinnaroo.
He has a special interest in sport, displayed recently by taking his practical exam in developmental tennis coaching for which he now eagerly awaits his results and also wishes to further his education by obtaining a sports medicine degree in future.
