From the 1st July 2002, the Mallee Health Service Inc began operation. The implementation of the Mallee Health Service follows almost two years of planning and community consultation in the district. Karoonda and Districts Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital, Karoonda Homes for the Aged, Lameroo District Health Service, Lameroo Homes for the Aged and Pinnaroo Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital will amalgamate to form the Mallee Health Service.

Health and aged care services will be provided throughout the area of Karoonda, Lameroo, Pinnaroo and the surrounding towns.

Additional primary health care funding of approximately $420,000 per annum, provided through the Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing’s Regional Health Service Program, will enable the Mallee Health Service to provide greater local access to more integrated health and aged care services.

Other new programs to be implemented following the amalgamation include: Mental Health Services; Youth Programs; Cancer Support Program; Specialist Nursing Positions (including wound care, midwifery, continence, diabetes, immunisation and cardiac care); Primary Health Care programs including additional services in physiotherapy, podiatry, speech pathology, occupational therapy and dietetics; Transport services for the region will also be improved under the new structure and negotiations are currently underway with the Passenger Transport Board.

In the first week of July, the new Board of Directors for the Mallee Health Service will meet to elect the office bearers. The inaugural Board comprises three members from each of the previous Hospital Boards of Directors and will continue to be locally elected positions.
